Boiler Grants in the UK: Who Qualifies?

Boiler Grants in the UK: Who Qualifies? - DCI Boilers guide

Can you get a boiler grant in the UK? For some households, genuinely yes. Government-backed schemes such as ECO4 fund heating improvements, which can include replacing an old, inefficient boiler, for households on certain benefits or on low incomes in energy-inefficient homes. For many other households the honest answer is no, and it is better to hear that straight away than after weeks of chasing.

This guide explains how the schemes work, who tends to qualify, how to check safely, and what your options are if you do not qualify. We will be straight with you throughout, because the boiler grant world attracts more than its share of misleading adverts, and we would rather you knew exactly where you stand.

What ECO4 actually is

ECO stands for the Energy Company Obligation. It is a government scheme, currently in its fourth phase (ECO4), that obliges the large energy suppliers to fund energy efficiency improvements in the homes that need them most. The money comes through the energy companies and is delivered by approved installers, and the scheme is designed to run to March 2026, with future phases and successor schemes subject to government decisions.

Two things about ECO4 surprise people. First, it is a whole-house scheme. Rather than simply swapping a boiler, assessors look at the property’s overall energy performance, and funded work can include insulation and heating controls alongside, or sometimes instead of, a new boiler. Second, straightforward boiler-for-boiler replacements are only part of the picture, and the scheme leans towards homes with the worst energy ratings. A related strand often called the Great British Insulation Scheme covers insulation measures for a wider group of households.

Who tends to qualify

Eligibility rules are set by the scheme, applied by installers and energy companies, and they do change, so treat what follows as a guide to how the schemes are shaped rather than a promise. Broadly, ECO4 support is aimed at households that meet criteria like these:

  • Receiving certain means-tested benefits, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Child Tax Credit, Working Tax Credit or Housing Benefit.
  • Living in an energy-inefficient home, typically with a low Energy Performance Certificate rating (the schemes prioritise D to G rated properties, with the worst-rated homes first in line).
  • Owning the home, or renting it privately with the landlord’s permission. Rules differ between owner-occupiers and tenants.
  • Some households not on benefits can qualify through a route called ECO4 Flex, where local councils identify low-income or vulnerable households, for example on health grounds. This route depends entirely on your local council’s published criteria.

One point worth stressing for boiler replacements specifically: the schemes generally fund replacing an old, broken or very inefficient boiler, not upgrading a working modern one. If your boiler was installed in the last decade, a grant is unlikely regardless of your income.

How to check, without being misled

Nobody, including us, can promise you a grant. Be wary of any advert or cold call that guarantees a free boiler before anyone has asked about your benefits, your EPC rating or your existing boiler. Legitimate schemes always involve checks, and the funding decision sits with the scheme, not the salesperson.

The safe way to check is directly through official channels:

  • Use the government’s own eligibility guidance at gov.uk (search “Energy Company Obligation” or “help with home energy”) to see the current rules.
  • Contact your energy supplier, as the obligated suppliers publish their own ECO application routes.
  • Ask your local council about ECO4 Flex if you are on a low income but not receiving qualifying benefits.
  • Check your home’s EPC rating free on the gov.uk EPC register, since the rating matters to eligibility.

If you do qualify, the work must be carried out by installers approved under the scheme. Take the time to check any firm’s credentials, and never pay an upfront “processing fee” to access a government grant.

If you do not qualify: the realistic alternatives

Most working households do not qualify for ECO4, and it is better to plan around that than to wait on a scheme that was never aimed at you. The good news is that replacing a tired boiler tends to make financial sense on its own terms. Modern condensing boilers convert more of the gas they burn into useful heat than boilers from the 1990s and 2000s, so an upgrade from an old, inefficient model can make a meaningful dent in a winter gas bill. How much you save depends on the boiler you are replacing, your home and how you heat it, so treat any advertised savings figure with caution, but the direction of travel is real: newer boiler, better controls, less wasted gas.

There are also practical ways to manage the cost. Getting a fixed quote means you know the full price before committing, with no extras on the day. Timing helps too: replacing a boiler on your own schedule, before it fails, is invariably cheaper and calmer than a distress purchase in January. If your current boiler is limping, a boiler servicing visit or a repair assessment can tell you honestly whether it has a few winters left or whether replacement is the sensible spend.

How DCI Boilers can help

DCI Boilers gives straight answers on this. We are a Gas Safe and OFTEC registered installer covering Cornwall and Devon, and while grant funding routes come and go, what we can always offer is a free, fixed, no-obligation quote for a gas boiler replacement so you can compare your real options side by side. If a grant route looks plausible for your circumstances we will say so and point you to the official check rather than making promises we cannot keep. And if a new boiler is the answer, our gas boiler replacement service comes with fixed upfront pricing and manufacturer warranties of up to 12 years on qualifying installations.

Frequently asked questions

Are boiler grants really free, or is there a catch?

Genuine ECO4 funding can cover all or most of the cost for qualifying households, though in some cases a contribution is requested depending on the survey and the measures involved. The catch to avoid is not the scheme itself but misleading middlemen. Never pay an upfront fee to “unlock” a government grant, and always verify the installer.

I am on Universal Credit. Will I definitely get a new boiler?

Not definitely. A qualifying benefit is one part of the criteria, but the property’s EPC rating, the age and state of your current boiler, and the scheme’s assessment all matter too. The only way to know is to run the official checks on gov.uk or through your energy supplier.

Can I get a grant for an oil boiler replacement?

ECO4 is primarily designed around improving the worst-performing homes, and support for oil-fired replacements is much more limited, with the scheme generally favouring other heating measures for off-grid homes. If you heat with oil, it is worth asking your council about ECO4 Flex, but be prepared for the answer to be a funded insulation measure or an alternative heating system rather than a new oil boiler.

Do the schemes cover heat pumps instead of boilers?

Sometimes, yes. ECO4 can fund heat pumps where the assessment supports it, and the separate Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a grant towards a heat pump for a much wider group of homeowners (it does not fund gas boilers, despite the name). Whether a heat pump suits your home is a separate question, and worth an honest conversation before you commit either way.
