Ask a room full of heating engineers which boiler they would put in their own house and most will say Worcester Bosch or Vaillant, with Viessmann and Ideal close behind, and Grant for oil. The reasons are practical rather than glamorous: those boilers rarely come back with faults, parts are on the merchant’s shelf the same day, the manufacturer’s technical line answers the phone, and the warranties are long enough that the engineer is not the one paying for a failure. This guide explains what engineers value and how to use that when choosing your own boiler.
What engineers actually care about
Call-back rate
Every return visit to fix a fault costs an installer money and reputation. Engineers develop a strong sense of which boilers they never see again and which ones they are back to within a year. That experience is the most honest reliability data there is.
Parts availability
A boiler is only as good as the speed at which it can be repaired. Mainstream brands stock parts at every plumbers’ merchant. Obscure brands mean a customer without heat for a week while a part comes from abroad.
Technical support
The best manufacturers run technical helplines staffed by people who know the boiler, and field engineers who come out under warranty. That support decides whether a tricky fault is fixed in an hour or a day.
Ease of installation and servicing
Engineers like boilers that hang on a bracket cleanly, have accessible components, sensible flue kits and clear commissioning menus. A boiler that fights the installer is more likely to be installed imperfectly.

The boilers engineers recommend most
- Worcester Bosch Greenstar. The default recommendation for many gas engineers: dependable, easy to service, parts everywhere, long warranties through accredited installers.
- Vaillant ecoTEC. The choice for a quieter, more refined boiler with excellent build quality. Popular with engineers who install premium systems.
- Viessmann Vitodens. Stainless steel heat exchangers throughout and outstanding efficiency. Recommended where the customer wants the best and the engineer knows the brand.
- Ideal Logic and Vogue. The value recommendation that engineers are happy to put their name to, with strong warranties and British parts support.
- Grant Vortex (oil). The oil boiler OFTEC engineers reach for first in rural Cornwall and Devon, for reliability and parts.

What engineers recommend for a combi
For a combi specifically, the recommendation usually turns on hot water performance. Engineers look at the flow rate the boiler can deliver at a useful temperature, and match it to the number of bathrooms and the incoming mains pressure. For a one-bathroom home, a mid-range combi from any of the brands above is plenty. For two bathrooms, a higher-output combi from Worcester Bosch, Vaillant or Viessmann, or a system boiler with a cylinder, is the more common advice. Our guide on boiler flow rate explains the numbers.
Why an engineer may recommend a brand you have not heard of
Sometimes an installer pushes a brand because they are accredited with it, which brings a longer warranty and better support, and that is a legitimate reason. Occasionally it is because the margin is better. The way to tell is to ask why. A good engineer explains the recommendation in terms of your house and your hot water needs, mentions the warranty and is happy to fit an alternative if you prefer. A poor one changes the subject.
How to use the advice
- Ask two installers which boiler they would fit and why.
- Check the warranty each can offer, and whether it depends on their accreditation.
- Look at the range within the brand, not just the badge; most manufacturers make budget, mid and premium models.
- Weigh the installer’s own record as heavily as the boiler’s.

Frequently asked questions
What boiler do most plumbers have in their own house?
Worcester Bosch and Vaillant are the most common answers, with Grant for engineers on oil.
Should I just fit whatever the engineer recommends?
Ask why. A good recommendation is explained in terms of your home and comes with a long warranty. If the reasoning is clear, it is usually sound advice.
Do engineers get paid to recommend certain boilers?
Accredited installers receive better warranties and support from their manufacturer, which is a legitimate benefit to you. Ask about any incentives and judge the reasoning on its merits.
Are premium boilers worth the extra?
For larger homes, high hot water demand or a long ownership, often yes. For a small home with one bathroom, a mid-range boiler from a reliable brand is usually the sensible choice.
