The boiler brands with the strongest reliability records in the UK are, year after year, Worcester Bosch, Vaillant and Viessmann, with Ideal, Baxi and Glow-worm close behind in the mainstream tier and Grant and Worcester Bosch leading on oil. That said, the honest answer is that the difference between a well-installed boiler from any of those manufacturers and a badly installed one from the same range is far bigger than the difference between the brands. Reliability is bought with a good installer, a clean system and an annual service as much as with the badge on the front.
This guide explains how reliability is actually measured, what separates the top manufacturers from the rest, and how to weigh the brand against the other things that decide whether your boiler is trouble-free for fifteen years.
How boiler reliability is measured
There is no single official league table. The most useful evidence comes from three sources: consumer surveys that ask thousands of owners how often their boiler has broken down, engineer surveys that ask the people who repair boilers which ones they see least, and the manufacturers’ own warranty terms, which are a fair signal of how confident they are in their product. When all three point the same way, the picture is reliable.
The manufacturers that consistently score well
Worcester Bosch
The most recommended brand among UK engineers for many years, with a wide range, strong parts availability and long warranties through accredited installers. The Greenstar range dominates gas installations and the oil range is well regarded in rural areas.
Vaillant
German-engineered, quiet and efficient, with a reputation for build quality and a strong warranty through accredited installers. The ecoTEC range is a common recommendation for homes wanting premium performance.
Viessmann
Another German manufacturer with an excellent reliability record, stainless steel heat exchangers across the range and long warranties. Slightly less common in the UK, which can mean fewer local engineers familiar with it.

Ideal
British-made, good value and much improved over the past decade. The Logic and Vogue ranges have solid reliability records and long warranties, and Ideal is a frequent choice where budget matters without sacrificing dependability.
Baxi and Glow-worm
Both are established British names in the mainstream tier, with sensible warranties and wide parts availability. Reliability is good, and both are common in homes where a premium boiler would be over-specification.
Grant (oil)
For oil boilers, Grant is the name most often recommended by OFTEC engineers, alongside Worcester Bosch. The Vortex range has a strong record in rural Cornwall and Devon. Our guide to the best oil boilers covers the oil market in detail.
Why the installer matters as much as the brand
A boiler’s reliability is decided in the first day of its life. Fitted to a system that has not been flushed, without a magnetic filter, with a flue that is slightly off or a gas supply that is undersized, the best boiler in the world will fail early. Fitted properly, commissioned with a flue gas analyser and serviced every year, a mid-range boiler will run for fifteen years without drama. Choosing the installer with as much care as the boiler is the single best thing you can do for reliability. Our guide on how to choose a boiler installer explains what to look for.
What else affects reliability
- Water quality. Hard water scales heat exchangers; a scale reducer helps.
- System cleanliness. Sludge is the leading cause of early failure. A flush, a filter and inhibitor are essential.
- Correct sizing. An oversized boiler short-cycles and wears out faster.
- Annual servicing. Required for the warranty and the surest way to catch a part before it fails.
- Parts availability. A mainstream brand with local stockists means a fault is fixed the same day rather than next week.

How to choose
Pick from the manufacturers above, choose the range that fits your hot water demand and budget, and then let the installer’s accreditation guide you: the longest warranties are only available through installers accredited by that manufacturer, and an installer who fits a brand every week knows it inside out. Our guide on what boilers heating engineers recommend explains why engineers tend to favour the brands they do.

Frequently asked questions
Is Worcester Bosch really the most reliable boiler?
It consistently tops engineer and owner surveys, but Vaillant and Viessmann score just as well. The installation and servicing matter more than the gap between them.
Are cheaper boiler brands unreliable?
Not necessarily. Mainstream brands such as Ideal, Baxi and Glow-worm have good records. The risk is with unknown brands that lack parts and local support.
Does a longer warranty mean a more reliable boiler?
Broadly, yes. Manufacturers only offer ten or twelve year warranties on boilers they expect to last, and only through installers they trust to fit them properly.
Which oil boiler brand is most reliable?
Grant and Worcester Bosch are the two most recommended by OFTEC engineers, with Warmflow and Firebird also well regarded.
