The clearest signs you need a new boiler are repeated breakdowns, a yellow or orange flame, rising fuel bills without a change in tariff, a boiler that struggles to heat the house, parts that are no longer available, and an age past fifteen years. One of those on its own is a reason to have the boiler assessed. Two or three together mean it is time to plan a replacement before the boiler makes the decision for you.
Boilers rarely fail without warning. They give notice for a year or two beforehand, and the people who end up without heat in January are usually the ones who ignored it. Here are the ten signs, roughly in order of how urgent they are.
1. A yellow or orange flame
A healthy gas flame is crisp and blue. A yellow, orange or lazy flame means incomplete combustion, which produces carbon monoxide. Switch the boiler off and call a Gas Safe engineer the same day. It may be a repairable fault, but on an old boiler it is often the beginning of the end. Make sure you have a working carbon monoxide alarm.
2. A smell when it runs
A smell of gas near the boiler, or a sharp, eggy or metallic smell when it fires, is an immediate call to the gas emergency number and then to an engineer. Oil boilers that smell of oil or produce smoke also need looking at promptly.

3. Repeated breakdowns
One repair in a decade is normal. A repair every winter is a boiler telling you it has reached the stage where parts are failing in turn. Add up what you have spent on repairs in the last two years; if it is approaching a meaningful share of the cost of a new boiler, stop.
4. Parts are hard to get
If the engineer has started saying “let me see if I can find one”, the boiler is beyond its supported life. The next fault may be one that cannot be fixed at all.
5. Rising bills
If your gas or oil use has crept up over a couple of years without any change in how you heat the house, the boiler is losing efficiency. Scale and corrosion inside the heat exchanger and a worn burner both reduce how much of the fuel becomes heat.
6. It struggles to heat the house
Radiators that take an age to warm up, hot water that runs lukewarm, or a boiler that seems to run constantly without the house getting properly warm all point to a boiler that no longer produces the output it once did, or a system so full of sludge the heat cannot get round. Either way, it needs assessing.
7. Noise
Banging, clunking, whistling or a kettle-like rumble from the boiler usually means scale on the heat exchanger, a failing pump or air in the system. Our guide to a boiler making noises explains which sound means what. On an old boiler, kettling in particular is a sign the heat exchanger is on its way.
8. Leaks
Water around the base of the boiler, or a pressure that keeps dropping with no leak elsewhere in the system, suggests a failing internal seal, pump or heat exchanger. Small leaks corrode electrics and turn into large ones.
9. Frequent lock-outs and fault codes
A boiler that needs resetting every few days is not “just being temperamental”. Each lock-out is a fault the boiler detected. Repeated resets can turn a minor problem into a major one.
10. Age
Past fifteen years, and certainly past twenty, a boiler is almost always non-condensing and well into the period where parts wear out. Even a reliable one is costing you more in fuel than a modern boiler would. Our guide on whether a 20 year old boiler should be replaced looks at the decision properly, and how to check when your boiler was installed helps if you are not sure of the age.

What to do next
Book a service and ask the engineer for a frank assessment of the boiler’s condition and remaining life. If the answer is that it is on its way out, get a survey and a fixed quote for a replacement while the boiler is still working, so you can choose the boiler, the timing and the installer rather than taking whatever is available in an emergency.
How DCI Boilers can help
DCI Boilers gives honest assessments during boiler servicing visits across Cornwall and Devon and, when a boiler has reached the end, fits modern gas and oil boilers at a fixed price with manufacturer warranties of up to 12 years. Our engineers are Gas Safe and OFTEC registered. Read about our gas boiler replacement service, or for a boiler that has already failed, our emergency boiler call-out.

Frequently asked questions
Is a yellow flame always serious?
Treat it as serious. It indicates incomplete combustion and possible carbon monoxide. Switch off and call a registered engineer.
How many repairs is too many?
If the boiler has needed a repair in two of the last three winters, or the total spent on repairs is becoming significant, replacement is usually the better use of the money.
Can a boiler be too old to service?
No, but an engineer may refuse to work on one that fails a safety check or has no parts available.
Should I replace a boiler before it breaks down?
Ideally, yes. Replacing on your own timetable, in late summer, is calmer and cheaper than an emergency replacement in winter.
