Ideal boilers, particularly the Logic range, are fitted in huge numbers because they are good value and easy to service, and they show a consistent set of codes when something is wrong. F1 is low water pressure, F2 is flame loss, L2 is ignition lockout, F3 is a fan fault, F4 and F5 are flow and return sensor faults, F6 is the outside sensor, F7 is a low mains voltage, F9 is a board fault and FD is a board fault as well. F1 and a one-off L2 are things you can usually sort yourself. The others need a Gas Safe engineer.
This guide lists the Ideal codes engineers see most in Cornwall and Devon, what each means and what to do.
F1: low water pressure
The system has dropped below about 0.5 bar. Top up to around 1.3 bar via the filling loop and the boiler will restart, sometimes after a reset. Frequent F1 means a leak or a flat expansion vessel. Our guide to a boiler losing pressure explains the causes.
L2: ignition lockout
The boiler tried to light and failed. In winter the commonest cause by far is a frozen condensate pipe. Otherwise a gas supply interruption, a faulty ignition lead or electrode, a gas valve fault or a flue issue. Check the gas is on and the condensate pipe is clear, reset once, and if it comes back call an engineer. Our guide to a frozen condensate pipe covers thawing.

F2: flame loss
The flame went out while the boiler was running. Similar causes to L2, plus a gust of wind, a partially blocked condensate route or a failing flame sensor. One reset; then an engineer.
F3: fan fault
The fan is not reaching or holding the expected speed. Often a failing fan, a blocked flue or a wiring connection. Engineer-only, and worth attending promptly, because a fan that fails completely leaves you without heat.
F4 and F5: flow and return thermistor faults
A temperature sensor is open or short circuit. Sometimes a loose plug; often a failed sensor, which is a quick replacement.
F6: outside sensor fault
Only relevant if an outdoor sensor is fitted for weather compensation. A wiring or sensor fault.
F7: low mains voltage
The boiler is not getting enough voltage. Occasionally a genuine supply problem, more often a poor connection at the spur or inside the boiler.
F9 and FD: board faults
The printed circuit board has detected an internal fault. Sometimes cleared by a full power-off for a minute; if it returns, the board may need replacing.
Boiler locks out on hot water only
On Logic combis, a boiler that heats the house but locks out or goes cold on hot water usually has a scaled plate heat exchanger or a sticking diverter valve. Both are routine repairs. Our guide to a combi boiler going hot and cold explains the symptoms.
Water leaking from the bottom
Ideal Logic boilers occasionally weep from the pressure relief valve, the pump or a heat exchanger seal. Switch off and call an engineer.
Ideal Logic specific points
The Logic range is compact and simple to service, and a few of its habits are worth knowing. The condensate trap sits low in the boiler and can hold debris that produces intermittent L2 codes, so a trap clean is part of a good Logic service. The pressure gauge on some models is a small dial behind the drop-down flap rather than on the front, which catches people out when they cannot find it. And the built-in filling loop on newer Logic combis is a lever under the boiler rather than a braided hose, so a “filling loop not working” complaint is often simply the lever not turned fully. Our guide to a filling loop not working covers the different types.
What you can safely do
- Top up pressure for F1.
- Thaw the condensate pipe for a winter L2.
- Check the gas supply and the programmer.
- Power the boiler off for a minute for a one-off board code.
- Reset once. If the code returns, stop and call.
Our guide to how to reset a boiler explains the safe way to do it.

How DCI Boilers can help
DCI Boilers repairs Ideal Logic, Vogue and older ranges across Cornwall and Devon, with Gas Safe registered engineers who carry fans, sensors, electrodes and plate heat exchangers for the common models and quote a fixed price before starting. Book boiler repairs, or if you have no heat, our emergency boiler call-out runs around the clock. Annual boiler servicing catches most of these faults early.

Frequently asked questions
What does L2 mean on an Ideal boiler?
Ignition lockout. The boiler failed to light. In winter, check the condensate pipe for ice first, then reset once.
What does F1 mean on an Ideal Logic?
Low water pressure. Top the system up to around 1.3 bar via the filling loop.
Why does my Ideal boiler keep locking out?
Repeated lockouts mean a persistent fault, commonly an ignition component, the condensate route or the fan. An engineer can find it in one visit.
Are Ideal boilers reliable?
Modern Logic and Vogue ranges have good records and long warranties. Like any boiler, they depend on a clean system and an annual service.
